1839- Enters West Point and changes his name from Hiram Ulysses Grant, to Ulysses S. Grant

1843- Graduates from West Point and ranked 21st of 39 scholars

1846- Leads his first troops in Mexican War

1847- Helps capture Mexico City and is promoted to Captain

1862- Promoted to Major General

1864- Appointed Lieutenant General of the Union Army

1865- Grant defeats Confederates and gives surrender terms to General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Virginia

1868- Elected President of the United States

1885- Dies on July 23
