When he was 22 years old, he was called to duty in
southern Louisiana. He stayed there for a year. After that he was reassigned closer to the
Mexican border, in Texas. When he was 24 years old he got his first taste of battle at the
battle of Palo Alto. He was assigned to protect the supply wagon but he disobeyed that
order and charged into battle. When he got to the front lines, they were out of
ammunition. An officer chose him to retrieve more. He had to ride through the streets that
were full of Mexican snipers. He hung on the side of his horse while the snipers fired. He
made it safely to the supply wagon and back without a scratch. Another battle he fought in
was to help capture Mexico City. He took a small cannon and fired on Mexican troops during
battle. For his brave achievements in Mexico, he was promoted for private to First
Lieutenant. After fighting in Mexico he married Julia Dent, his high school sweet heart. When he was 29 years old Julia had a baby boy whose name was Fredrick. In 1852 he was reassigned to the Pacific Coast. Julia could not come because she was expecting another baby. They had a daughter named Nellie and a son named Jesse. He built his family a house on the land Julias father gave them. They lived there for a long time. |
